Iran stands in the eighteenth position in its area.
This large country measures for about 1,648,000 km2 in area. An approximate calculation says that, Iran equals most of the western countries like Spain, France, Germany and United Kingdom in size. It has its waters from the Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf. Iran is called the world's known mountainous countries.
It landscape is dominated with rugged mountains which separate the plateau and the basins from one another.
The western part of the mountain is the one that is most popular. It has ranges such as Zagros, Abborz, and Caucasus. The highest point of Iran lies in the Alborz mountain range.
It is called the Mount Damavand. This is 5,610m high, and it is also found to be the highest mountain lying on the Eurasian landmass. The mount Damavand is located in Mazanderan. The shomal, also called the Jungles of Iran, forms the dense rain forest regions of the northern part.
Whereas the eastern part of Iran consists of desert basins. Dasht-e Kavir is the largest desert lying on the north-central region of the country. There are some salt lakes on the eastern side, where the desert called Dasht-e Lut lies. The only large plains that you can find in Iran, is the one that lies along the Caspian Sea coast.
The climate of Iran varies from subtropical to arid or semiarid.
The winters are sometime very cold, and the temperature goes down below zero with heavy snowfall. The average summer temperature of Iran is around 38 °C. The coastal areas experience mild winters, and hot summers with humid climatic conditions. This country has a wide range of animal species like the wild pigs, gazelles, bears, wolves, panthers, jackals, foxes, and Eurasian lynx.
Also, you have the goats, sheep, horses, cattle, donkeys, camels and water buffalo making the species of domestic animals living in this country. The Asiatic cheetah is the wildest endangered animal in the country. It is well known as the Iranian Cheetah. After the Iran revolution, the count of this species was greatly reduced.
Even now, the government is taking all measures to increase the population of the Iranian Cheetah. They are planning to increase the count, and introduce it to India. Already, it has lost its Asiatic lion, and in the early twentieth century, the Caspian tigers also got extinct.
The country of Iran is divided into 31 provinces, each of them governed by an appointed governor.
The provinces are further divided into countries that are subdivided into districts and sub-districts. Persian music has the highest urban growth rate. The urban population has increased from 27% to 60% within the years of 1950 and 2002. Mashhad is the second largest city in Iran with the population of 2,410,800.
It is also the holiest city of the place. Iran has a great political background with lots of war.
